A structured rehabilitation programme to help you recover from ACL surgery, rebuild strength and return to the activities you enjoy.
At Next Level Physiotherapy, we provide personalised ACL rehabilitation at our Blarney and Little Island clinics in Cork. From the early stages after surgery through to returning to sport, we’ll guide you through each stage of your recovery.

Why ACL Rehabilitation Matters
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) helps keep your knee stable, particularly when running, jumping and changing direction. Following ACL reconstruction, physiotherapy plays an important role in restoring movement, rebuilding strength and improving knee stability.
Recovery can take 9–12 months for patients returning to sport. At Next Level Physiotherapy, we provide a progressive rehabilitation programme tailored to your recovery, goals and consultant’s post-operative guidelines.
Who Is ACL Rehabilitation For?
Our ACL rehabilitation programmes are suitable for patients who:
- Have recently undergone or are preparing for ACL reconstruction surgery.
- Want guidance and a structured plan throughout their recovery.
- Are working towards returning to GAA, soccer, rugby, running or other sports.
- Had ACL surgery previously but are still experiencing weakness or difficulty returning to activity.
What Does ACL Rehabilitation Involve?
Every rehabilitation programme follows your consultant’s guidelines and progresses according to how your knee responds, rather than time alone.
Rehabilitation generally involves four key stages:
1. Early Recovery
Managing pain and swelling, restoring knee movement, activating the quadriceps and gradually returning to normal walking, with crutches used as advised by your consultant.
2. Rebuilding Strength & Stability
Progressive strengthening of the muscles surrounding the knee, alongside balance and movement-control exercises to improve stability.
3. Running, Jumping & Changing Direction
Gradually reintroducing running, jumping, landing and changes of direction once the appropriate strength and movement milestones have been reached.
4. Return to Sport
Sport-specific rehabilitation, strength and functional testing, and a gradual return to training to help you return with confidence.

What Our Patients Say
“I was going to physio with John for about 12 months, he was a great physio and very knowledgeable about each of the issues I had. He helped me through recovery from 2 knee surgeries and brought me through a guided recovery, exercise and training plan to build up the strength in my knee. My knee feels as strong as ever now again and I am able to do more than I ever expected to. He was a pleasure to deal with, very professional and easy to talk to. I would highly recommend John for physiotherapy.”

Frequently Asked Questions About ACL Rehabilitation
Usually within the first week or two following surgery, depending on your consultant’s instructions. Early rehabilitation focuses on managing swelling, restoring movement and activating the muscles around your knee.
Returning fully to sport commonly takes around 9–12 months. Your recovery will depend on your surgery, rehabilitation progress and individual goals.
You may need more frequent appointments in the early stages, with sessions becoming less frequent as you progress and become more independent with your programme.
You don’t need a referral to book a physiotherapy appointment. If you’ve recently had ACL surgery, please bring any post-operative guidelines provided by your consultant.
