Regain your strength, improve your mobility and get back to everyday activities with physiotherapy tailored to your hip replacement recovery.
Recovering from a hip replacement takes time, and having the right support can make everyday activities feel more manageable. At Next Level Physiotherapy, our Chartered Physiotherapists provide personalised hip replacement rehabilitation at our Blarney and Little Island clinics in Cork, as well as home visits for patients who need them.

Physiotherapy After Hip Replacement Surgery
A total hip replacement is often carried out when severe osteoarthritis causes ongoing pain, stiffness and difficulty with everyday activities. While surgery replaces the damaged joint, physiotherapy helps you gradually rebuild strength, improve your walking and regain confidence in your movement.
In the early weeks, you may experience discomfort, reduced mobility or difficulty walking without crutches. Your physiotherapist will guide you through your recovery while following any precautions provided by your consultant or hospital team.
For additional information on recovery, you can read the HSE’s guidance on recovering from a hip replacement.
Who Is Hip Replacement Physiotherapy For?
Our hip replacement rehabilitation is suitable for patients who:
- Have recently undergone a total hip replacement.
- Are finding it difficult to walk comfortably or are still relying on crutches or a walking stick.
- Are experiencing weakness, stiffness or reduced confidence in their balance.
- Want to return to walking, driving, work or their usual hobbies.
- Are preparing for hip replacement surgery and would like advice on exercises beforehand.
What Does Hip Replacement Rehabilitation Involve?
Your rehabilitation programme will depend on your surgery, current mobility and individual goals. Our physiotherapists will work within your consultant’s guidelines, gradually progressing your exercises and activities as you recover.
1. Early Recovery & Hip Precautions
Advice on managing discomfort, understanding your post-operative precautions and beginning gentle exercises to restore movement safely.
2. Improving Walking & Balance
Walking practice to improve your gait, reduce limping and help you gradually progress from crutches or a walking stick as appropriate. Balance exercises can also help improve confidence on your feet.
3. Rebuilding Hip Strength & Mobility
Progressive exercises to strengthen the muscles around your hip and legs, improve flexibility and support more comfortable everyday movement.
4. Returning to Everyday Activities
Gradually increasing your activity levels, from longer walks and managing stairs to getting back to work, gardening, golf or other hobbies you enjoy.

Our physiotherapists will take these precautions into account when planning your rehabilitation.
Recovery varies from person to person. Many patients notice improvements in walking and everyday mobility during the first few months, although strength and function can continue improving for up to a year.
